Fem Con
FemCon is a theater performance by Fyndnustu mínar(Funny Gurlz), one of the few all-female stand-up groups in Iceland.
FemCon satirizes white corporate feminism, offering sarcastic, right-wing, patriarchal “solutions” to women’s problems. Through the framework of a feminist workshop, FemCon explores how pop culture uses feminism as a marketing tool, offering absurd advice like makeup tips for corporate success or self-hypnosis for post-baby weight loss.
Our research focused on the commercialization of feminism, especially the GirlBoss phenomenon, asking questions like: Is exclusionary feminism truly feminist? Can radical feminist ideas be co-opted by capitalism? And why are white women so obsessed with true crime podcasts?
FemCon premiered in Borgarleikhúsið (Reykjavík City Theater) as part of their program “Unwrapped” — an annual series of three different shows, each produced in one month and performed in a raw performance space. The series went on to win “Sprout of the year” at Gríman, the Icelandic Theater Awards for the performances of the year 2021–2022, including FemCon.
